Tip number two for our new feature - what makes a Tip number two for our new feature - what makes a great dental team by dental nurses.

We are really grateful to @donna9682 for sharing the second tip.

Tip number 2 - Trust and believe in each other.

“A great team consists of multiple factors. Trust, mutual respect, open and effective communication with the ability to listen, clarity of vision and goals, are to name just a few.

When you trust and believe in each other is when you start to become in tune with all your team and then able to support each other, and share the success.

It is important that when we talk about the team that this refers to the whole practice as we all have a role to play in the care of our patients.

Great teams have trust, clear vision and inclusivity created by the leader(practice manager or principle), during the peak of the pandemic dental teams were (and still are) being pushed to their limits, and this tested many teams, and also brought teams together. When you put the right building blocks in place everyone flourishes.”

Tip number one for our new feature - what makes a Tip number one for our new feature - what makes a great dental team by dental nurses.

We asked @elizabethdacorte to share the first tip.

Tip 1 - Stay Humble.

“Being humble helps projects in the Practice to move forward as all members of the dental team play an important and unique role… from the cleaners to the management.

Since without the practice coordinators, nurses, hygienists, dental technicians, dentists, managers and the rest of the team, none of the projects in the dental practice could move forward.

Therefore, creating respectful, innovative and understanding environments is what allows the team to go far.

An excellent dental team knows how to redirect negative emotions in the workplace to transform them into positive feelings and find future solutions as a team but must importantly Is that a good dental team is a team of people who make dreams come true and awaken hope in others.”

The NEBDN certificate in dental radiography is a g The NEBDN certificate in dental radiography is a great choice for talented and ambitious dental nurses.

Dr Liz Moran, qualified dentist, dental nurse tutor looks at some of the ways having this qualification will benefit you.

1) Greater involvement in patient care. Dental nurses can take X-rays and be a bigger part of ensuring the patient is well looked after.

2) Better relationship with dentist. As a dentist I know how rushed we can be and having a highly skilled nurse is invaluable. Given the option I would always request a nurse with these additional skills as it improves our team work.

3) More career opportunities
Dental nurses with additional skills are highly sought after in dental practices. If you are looking for a promotion or a new job this qualification will give you an edge against the competition.

4) For those dental nurses who wish to progress in becoming a dental therapist/ hygienist this qualification will enhance any application to this course at university.

5) Having the NEBDN Certificate in Dental Radiography offers you the chance to improve your salary and get promoted

Our next course begins 2 February and there are very limited spaces available.

The dental nurse and the patient “Patients judg The dental nurse and the patient

“Patients judge the dental service they receive by the interaction with the service providers – the dentist and his or her staff” (Mindak, 2017)

After the receptionist, the dental nurse is often the first point of contact for the patient within practice. Studies show that opinions are formed in the first few seconds of meeting someone and so how you greet your patient as a dental nurse may have an impact not only on the patient’s treatment but their opinion of the practice as a whole. This is especially important in a post-pandemic world where patients’ visits to the dentist may have lapsed or they’ve become fearful of being back in practice.

Dental nurses are often seen as a confidante by the patient, someone they can trust and will sometimes open up to more than say the dentist. A good dental nurse has the skill to be able to deal with many different personalities, putting people at ease with a friendly and approachable manner. Happy patients equal a productive practice.

Just one of the many reasons dental nurses are so important.
In every profession there are heroes and we happen In every profession there are heroes and we happen to believe dental nurses are pretty incredible.

Dental nurses are part and parcel of a well-functioning clinic, not least from a legal point of view, but have you ever stopped to think just how vital they are to the dental profession?

An article in the British Dental Journal in 1999 commented that “Dental nurses are one of the most important groups within the dental team. They assist the dentist throughout the day and may act as advocates for the patient, as well as being an integral part of the dentist’s clinical regime. It would seem that the work of dental nurses is essential for a successful general practice.” This still rings true today and even more so since the emergence of COVID-19. Dental nurses are integral to the healthy and safe running of a dental practice. As listed in the General Dental Council (GDC) scope of practice, ‘preparing and maintaining the clinical environment, equipment …and implementing effective infection prevention and control procedures are key components of the dental nurse role. The organisation is key within any dental practice which is where a good dental nurse comes in, their multi-tasking skills are second to none!

So from all of us at SmileWisdom - thank you to all the talented caring dental nurses who are an essential part of quality dental care.

Want to know how to be an amazing dental nurse? Want to know how to be an amazing dental nurse?

We spoke to Dr. Glaucia Minei Dentist at @smilepod for her tips

She shared a few fundamental points.

BE ON TIME.

Do not let your colleagues work harder because of your lack of professionalism. Always be on time or even early. Be critical of yourself, and this will help you to grow. Be honest to your colleague who comes slightly late. If one person does not perform well this affects the entire team.

BE PREPARED

You can be the best nurse in the world, yet if you are not prepared, it won’t go well. Be organised. It is better to have a full table and use 80% of the material laid out, then missing 1 item and you have to spend time looking for it.

HELP AND UNDERSTAND YOUR DENTIST

It’s 11:55am, your lunch break is at 12 noon, yet the dentist is running late. ‘Here we go’ you think and start rolling your eyes up. This is time to FOCUS. You are helping a client who is in pain and you want to support your dentist who started to get stressed. There is not much you can do about that, yet you can choose to either be angry or change your attitude and actually accomplish something greater. Great teams don’t care how hard it takes to get results. Excellence is the most important thing.

PERCEPTION

Have you ever met someone and in 1 second you have a feeling that something is not right? This is the feeling patients get when you let your frustrations show. Be genuinely passionate about what you do, even on a bad day or if you have a hangover! If the dentist is in a bad mood be stronger than him or her, and do your very best because the patient sitting in your chair does not deserve to feel bad because of you.

Did you know today is blue Monday? As mental healt Did you know today is blue Monday? As mental health and depression are often overlooked we examine the link between our teeth and our mood.

There’s been a lot of talk regarding the link between gut health and depression. ‘Evidence indicates that major depression is accompanied by increased translocation of gut commensal Gram-negative bacteria (leaky gut) and consequent activation of oxidative and nitrosative (O&NS) pathways.’ (Gomes et al., 2018)

However, a recent study looked at the link between depression and inflammation in the mouth. The study found that increased root canal endotoxin levels accompanied with chronic apical periodontitis may cause depression and a lowered quality of life. (Gomes et al., 2018)

So what can do to keep our mouth and brain happy?

It is vital to keep any potential inflammation in the mouth in check. You may have been lucky enough to never experience bleeding gums when brushing your teeth but this is one of the first signs that something may be going awry in your mouth.

This localised inflammation is an early stage sign of gingivitis and if left untreated for a long period of time can lead to the more serious periodontitis.

You know from experience (think back to when you last had a terrible cold) that inflammation in the body can leave you feeling weak and unmotivated. Luckily with a cold, this usually only lasts a short time but with inflammation in the mouth going unchecked, unfavourable symptoms could go on for a long time.

It’s always best to get anything suspicious when it comes to your mouth and teeth checked out sooner rather than later.
